The President of the International Society for Human Rights congratulates the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy upon her being awarded the International Democracy Prize

(Bonn, 16.11.2016) The President of the International Council of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) has congratulated the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, upon her being awarded the Bonn International Democracy Prize in Bonn’s Altes Rathaus (old city hall). In particular, he acknowledged that Mogherini, as the moderator of the circle of 28 foreign ministers of the EU, has repeatedly emphasized that in the end the EU is before all else measured internally and externally against the state of human rights. Additionally, Mogherini is responsible for seeing to it that peacemaking in multilateral negotiations is seen more clearly the brand essence of the EU in all its mediation activities, eg in Columbia, Cyprus, Ukraine, and Iran.

Schirrmacher also thanked Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, who held the laudation, for his clear words that democracy without human rights is unthinkable and worthless and that European democracies have to be proven by repeatingly placing the safeguarding of human rights in everyday life at the forefront and by calling for and promoting the same globally.

The International Democracy Prize has been awarded five times so far. 2014 the International Democracy Prize was awarded to Reporters sans frontières/Reporters without Borders. The second award recipient, dating from 2010, is the Iranian lawyer, human rights activist, and Nobel Peace Prize awardee Dr. Shirin Ebadi, who is closely affiliated with the International Society for Human Rights.
